Ray Liotta was cast in the film in February 2022, but he died in May that year before he could film his scenes.

Dennis Quaid replaced him, but Liotta is still mentioned in the director’s "Thank You Notes" during the credits.. The toilet mirror reappears intact after being repeatedly smashed during the fight sequence.. A special thanks in the credits is given to the many extras in the theater scene, who got covered in blood..

But it’s all worth it
It’s is an experience to say the least. You will laugh, you will look away, your jaw will drop, you will feel uncomfortable. It’s incredible filmmaking, award winning acting and a smashing soundtrack all in one.

Magpie is a stylish neo-noir thriller centered around couple Anette (Daisy Ridley) and Ben (Shazad Latif), whose lives begin to unravel when their daughter is cast opposite a glamorous movie star, Alicia (Matilda Lutz). As Anette’s suspicions about Ben’s infatuation with Alicia intensify, their secrets and lies threaten to come to light and destroy them all.
A family is invited to spend an entire weekend at a lonely country home, but as the weekend progresses, they discover that the family that invited them has a dark side. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share elements of their characters. The story was inspired by the experiences of Danish Speak No Evil (2022) director Christian Tafdrup, who complimented each other while discussing their different approaches to the craft, befriending a Dutch couple while on vacation. Although the Dutch were somewhat socially awkward, both couples got along very well, and upon returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from the Dutch family to come over to the Netherlands. He thought briefly, but decided that it would feel strange to stay with people he didn’t really know; his story for the film came about when he unleashed his darkest fantasy of what might have happened if he had accepted (while maintaining that the original Dutch couple never gave a bad vibe). In this remake, the nationalities of the two families were changed to American and British.

If you’re watching this, it probably makes sense that you haven’t seen it – you’d think! Yet as you watch this (and mostly seem to stick to the blueprint), this film seems to be trying to "correct" things that some people didn’t like in the original… the boy is one of them… the disease can be hard to deal with… your situation makes you lose your passion… Not here – and that elevates the film.
His performance is both subtle and great
The same goes for James McAvoy…he really is the heart of the film. I don’t remember every little aspect of the original, and I don’t want to offend the original players… so let’s just say it’s awesome at this. The acting and script overall work very well with some added twists… even if the tweaks don’t seem that consequential at first… but in the end (literally) we get something different… for better or for worse! I like it – 1) because it’s different from the original and 2) because it fits the movie and the characters better! I was skeptical, but this one is just as good as the original…for different reasons!
